Memorial for Hillsborough disaster
Gooner-World on 04/15/2009 at 2:27pm (UTC)
The 15th of April 1989, FA cup semi-final, Hillsborough Stadium, home of Sheffield Wednesday was one of the worst sporting disasters. No it wasn't holliginism it was a disaster no-one can speak of, it was tragic, so tragic that no other disaster is like; it changed English football. No it wasn't an injury of a player it was lots of fans as they were crushed by the pitch invasion barriers. No it wasn't an Arsenal game it was Liverpool v Nottinham Forest. Some say it was crushing, some say it was crowd troble. The police and The Sun(tabloid) blame fans when it wasn't their fault. But we know all the fans will never walk alone and we know there wasn't a full game but it shocked English football. We know 96 innocent people died but we don't whos fault was it but I blame the police.

You'll never walk alone.

Gunners get target signing
Gooner-World on 02/03/2009 at 6:24pm (UTC)
Arsenal Football Club are delighted to sign their target for the summer and winter transfer market, Andrey Arshavin.
The former Zenit striker netted in 51 goals in 232 appearences(not bad). He scored 15 goals in 41 appearences for his national team Russia.
Arsenal's manager Arsene Wenger commented,“We are delighted to have signed Andrey Arshavin, he is a player I have admired for a long time. He is a versatile player with great experience, who will add real quality to our squad. Andrey is an exciting impact player with a huge amount of ability and has been an influential force with both Zenit St Petersburg and the Russian national team in recent seasons.”
After completing his move to North London Andrey said,“I am so happy to be joining Arsenal. They are one of the leading football clubs in the world, with a group of fantastic young players and a great manager. I am looking forward to making the Arsenal supporters happy and helping this great Club win trophies.”
Arshavin will wear number 23 for the gunners.
Good luck Andrey.

Arsenal draw Cardiff
Gooner-World on 01/25/2009 at 4:34pm (UTC)
Cardiff City held Arsenal at Ninian Park(City's stadium) to a 0-0 draw. It's lucky I surport both teams. There will be a replay in nine days.
The min to min from www.arsenal.com is below.

90 mins:
FULL TIME: CARDIFF CITY 0-0 ARSENAL: So these two sides will go at it again in little over a week. Today's game sparkled in fits and bursts, but wasteful finishing was the underlying theme

90 mins:
A time-wasting change from the Bluebirds. Eddie Johnson comes on for Bothroyd

90 mins:
A very innocuous challenge by Van Persie earns the Dutchman a yellow card; only the second of the match

90 mins:
Three minutes added time

90 mins:
...but it is headed over

89 mins:
Johnson slices his clearance wildly away for a corner for Arsenal...

88 mins:
A final change from the Gunners as Jack Wilshere comes on for Bendtner

87 mins:
...a superb effort from McCormack that cannons off the top of the bar

86 mins:
Toure bundles Rae over some 35 yards from goal. It is dead centre...

84 mins:
Arsenal have feasted on late goals in recent weeks, so fingers crossed they can find another one here in the Welsh capital

81 mins:
Excellent crisp passing from Arsenal but, as has become the custom today, the final ball is poor

79 mins:
Burke is coming off, with Tony Capaldi coming on in his place

78 mins:
Dan Roebuck has been impressed with Song today. Email studio@arsenal.co.uk and tell us if you agree with him

77 mins:
It is all one-way traffic now. Nasri is next to sting the palms of Enckelman

76 mins:
A big, big miss! Van Persie with a delicious floated cross to the back post to an unmarked Adebayor who completely scuffs his shot into the ground and easily into the hands of the 'keeper

74 mins:
Bendtner prances his way through but can't find his feet quick enough to get a shot off

71 mins:
Dan Roebuck thinks we are seeing the Arsenal of old with tidy, quick-fire passing from side to side. Richard Clarke also points out that Wenger has introduced some height; Diaby and Adebayor compared with Eboue and Ramsey

70 mins:
... it goes deep, too deep, and away for a goal kick
69 mins
Arsenal are much, much improved in the last few minutes. They force another corner...

68 mins:
A great introduction from Adebayor who flicks the ball into the path of Van Persie who is again thwarted by the brave Enckelman

67 mins:
When you need a goal, there a few better players to call on than Emmanuel Adebayor. The Togo man comes on for Eboue

64 mins:
Enckelman and Van Persie are enjoying a little battle. The Dutchman swivels expertly and strikes low, but the stopper saves well with his feet

62 mins:
It hasn't been much a welcome to the game for Diaby. The Frenchman catches a stray arm in the centre circle and needs treatment. He will be fine

61 mins:
... easily dealt with by the Gunners

60 mins:
McCormack draws the best out of Fabianski from distance - it is at the expense of a corner though...

60 mins:
As predicted, Ramsey trades places with Ramsey. The Welshman is applauded by both sets of fans - a nice touch

59 mins:
A terrific cross from Gibbs is nearly bundled home by a Cardiff shirt!

58 mins:
Abou Diaby is readying himself for action. Dan Roebuck thinks Ramsey might be the man to make way; the Welshman has been marked out of the game for the most part

56 mins:
It has been a mixed afternoon for the Gunners. Let us know your thoughts via email - studio@arsenal.co.uk

54 mins:
... a great effort from the Dutchman. Enckelman doesn't even move and is thankful to see the ball drop a matter of inches wide of the post

54 mins:
Parry fells Song, and this is right in Van Persie's range; about 30 yards from goal...

52 mins:
Cardiff have found their feet now though

50 mins:
...again it is nowhere near anyone in yellow.

49 mins:
Nasri's fierce drive is blocked and Arsenal have another corner...

47 mins:
... cleared

47 mins:
A bright start from the Gunners and they force an early corner...

46 mins:
Arsenal get the second half started

45 mins:
HALF-TIME: CARDIFF CITY 0-0 ARSENAL: It is an old cliché, but the game has been a good old fashioned cup tie, spiced with chances, good skill and the odd mistake. Cardiff have been most profligate and will go in believing Arsenal are there for the taking

45 mins:
In the space of a minute both teams fluff their two best chances. Bendtner culpable for Arsenal, with three men in blue all failing to get proper purchase on a shot

44 mins:
Not the best of ends to the half for Eboue. After Van Persie is bundled over, the ball falls to Eboue by the penalty spot with only the 'keeper to beat. However, with pitch in a bad way, the ball bobbles over the Ivorian's foot and away to safety

42 mins:
Another smart burst of pace from Eboue almost unlocks the Cardiff defence, although under a challenge from two players the Ivorian takes a tumble and is booked for simulation. It seems a little harsh

40 mins:
Van Persie tests Enckelman in one of Arsenal's clearest opportunities of the match so far

38 mins:
It has certainly been a much-improved 10-minute spell from the visitors

34 mins:
The best move of the match starts and ends with Gibbs. The young full-back wins the ball in midfield and after a neat give-and-go is allowed to shoot, but it lacks the venom to trouble Enckelman

32 mins:
... cleared at the near post

31 mins:
Good pace from Eboue forces a corner...

30 mins:
Richard Clarke and Dan Roebuck in the commentary box think the pitch is proving to be a stumbling block for the visitors. It does appear to be cutting up quite badly as the match progresses

28 mins:
If the first 25-minutes isn't evidence enough, Cardiff are not going to be a walkover; the Bluebirds are unbeaten since November

25 mins:
Bit better from the Gunners. Nasri is the catalyst in a 15-plus pass move, but the end product is a rash shot from Song

22 mins:
In an almost carbon-copy of his goal against Hull, Nasri is fed by Van Persie inside the left channel, only this time the Frenchman's shot is well saved by the goalkeeper

20 mins:
And then a mistake from Sagna lets in Parry who shoots wildly over when well placed in the penalty area

19 mins:
But no sooner is that said, does Ledley work a yard and fire a volley over just inside the box

19 mins:
But no sooner is that said, does Ledley work a yard and fire a volley over just inside the box

19 mins:
There has been much better ball retention from the visitors in the last few minutes

18 mins:
The commentary team want to hear your thoughts on the value of the FA Cup. The general consensus in the media has been that it is Arsenal's best chance of silverware. Email studio@arsenal.co.uk

14 mins:
Cardiff keep on coming, and McCormack flashes a left-foot strike wide from the corner of the area

13 mins:
The early fluency of the visitors' play has certainly gone in the last few minutes

11 mins:
Bothroyd unleashes a fierce drive from just outside the box. It goes a few feet over

10 mins:
Arsenal should really be behind! Ledley swings in an inch-perfect cross, but McCormack flashes his header well wide from only a few yards out

8 mins:
A big let off for the visitors as Chris Burke latches onto an excellent lofted pass from midfield, cuts inside Gibbs and lets rip; a combination of Toure and Djourou take the sting out of the shot and it is an easy take for the 'keeper in the end

6 mins:
Arsenal have settled quickly and are carefully probing

4 mins:
... good claim from Fabianski

3 mins:
Neat skill from Bothroyd, who fires a low cross onto Toure, and away for a corner....

1 mins:
We are underway

0 mins:
It is a raucous atmosphere here. A quirky stat for all those interested - Cardiff were the last team to visit Highbury in the FA Cup, and should the Gunners win here, they will be the last visiting team to Ninian Park in the famous competition; the Bluebirds are moving just across the road in the summer

0 mins:
The Arsenal.com commentary team are all predicting a close encounter, with two of the three opting for an away win

0 mins:
As for the hosts, former Youth Cup winner with Arsenal Jay Boothroyd starts up front, while hotly-pursued Joe Ledley captains the side from midfield. It will be an intersting battle between him and his Welsh team-mate Ramsey

0 mins:
Arsene Wenger makes five changes from the weekend victory over Hull, with the most notable inclusion being Aaron Ramsey; the Welsh midfielder joined the Gunners from Cardiff in the summer. Alex Song also returns from injury as does William Gallas, although the latter is only deemed fit enough for the bench

0 mins:
Good afternoon. Today's Match Day Show will start at 12:50pm, bringing you the video highlights and post-match reaction from Hull City v Arsenal, the latest betting information from Paddypower.com, the key moments from Friday's press conference and much more.

Wenger - I believe the trophies will come
From www.arsenal.com on 01/24/2009 at 8:40pm (UTC)
Arsène Wenger is determined to end his four-year wait for a major trophy but he won't sacrifice Arsenal's budget in the process.

The Frenchman takes his team to Cardiff on Sunday with a place in the last 16 of the FA Cup at stake. If you believe the bookies, the famous old cup represents Arsenal's best chance of silverware this term. Wenger may disagree with that - he has designs on three big prizes - but he admits that the clamour for success is growing.

However, on the day the UK officially slipped into recession, Wenger reiterated his desire to win trophies while keeping Arsenal on a sound financial footing. It's a juggling act he has just failed to carry off since 2005 but the Frenchman is confident of getting it right as his young players grow into big stars.

"The interesting thing in football is to work with a balanced budget, within your resources and build a big team," said Wenger.

"We have gone with a different policy to many clubs but we have a balanced budget, we are in a strong position financially, and we have a strong team that is very very young but with quality.

"When you don't win trophies it gets harder to resist the media and fans’ demands – of course you have to win trophies. But you must have perspective and the real quality is in the Premier League and Champions League. People forget how young we are.

"We have more and more players who are only 20 or 21 who have already beaten Manchester United and Chelsea and have already handled Premier League games whereas other haven’t kicked a ball in the Premier League.

"Don’t forget that you become really mature at 23 at that level so they will be ahead of that. That’s why I believe that we have to show now that we have the mental quality to win trophies and the mental quality required is consistency."
